I like taking photos of country things with texture; old rusty parts and doors and settings from days gone by. Image © Jain Lemos.

Photography that wins always seems to be a combination of familiarity and accessibility with a twist of intrigue. I’ve seen plenty of portfolios with shots of birds that are fine technically. Are you a big birder, I ask? No, is the answer. These are just shots from the workshop I took last year.

So what does interest you? Because that is where the good photos are. There is bound to be something that you do nearly every day that will make great pictures when combined with your own techniques and unique vision. Photos of everyday activities will always sell. Yes, even silly photos that might include flossing your teeth!

Melbourne-based shooter Bill Gekas found his mix of inspiration with his five-year-old daughter’s beauty and his love of classic works by the old master painters.  His lighting is superb and technically accurate. His subject is not only adorable but completely relaxed into the characters and settings.

That’s how to do it, people!
