There’s nothing like the start of a new year, so crisp and clean. January 1 reminds me of listening to Mark Knopfler. And it makes me feel as inspired as he was writing that mega hit after hanging out in a lonely pub listening to a fumbling jazz band who claimed they were the Sultans of Swing. And that is probably the thing for me about photography, if I have to put my finger on the shutter. It can surprise even an old classic like me.

Yesterday, my sis sent me a Snapchat of the bedspread I sent her for Christmas all set up in her room and then the image was gone before I could even smile. But the joy set in straight after, reminding me that leaving digital footprints is ultimately about living in the moment, then reflecting on the past in the charge of my own privacy. Maybe that is why I’ll start blogging again this year. I sure need a new discipline.

There is a good bit I know about photography and still way more to learn. This morning I saw a fresh white screen and a lighted path I’m going to follow. It’s the first year I’m heading into without my father, who died last February. He was such a hard worker. Happy 2014.
