If you have been creating short videos and using YouTube for distribution, you might not have heard about Vimeo. Quality sets them apart and if this is the type of showcasing you are using to present your work, you might do well to take advantage of their platform. Watch this photo promo from stock veteran Jack Hollingsworth titled, “See the World” and get a load of the snappy music, too. Go ahead, smile and enjoy yourself for a few minutes!
Jack uses fast transitions and smart sequencing in this 3:18-minute video. Note how the colors of each image connect to the next as he throws in grayscale shots as palette cleansers. Those of us with years of photo editing experience can, and do, look at images this fast. There are at least 300 photos in this piece so in about 200 seconds, we can gather practically all the information we need about the photographer’s style and the photography’s overarching message and usage potential.

Diseased Eucalyptus trees line the 44-acre recreational lake in the Laguna Niguel Regional Park. Photo by Jain Lemos.
The Eucalyptus trees in Laguna Niguel Regional Park near my house in Orange County, Calif. are suffering! Dozens of these mature trees lining the banks of the park’s fishing lake have this condition. According to this site, these are LERPS. A quick search of Google Images resulted in this reference image below. Even though this is from a Eucalyptus tree in Bullhead City, Ariz., the pests looks similar to what I found on our trees here. Their “Control Strategy” is not very encouraging, but since the date of their post was 2001 and the lerps were new pests at the time, perhaps they have since found a solution.
Item Name: Eucalyptus Redgum Lerp Psylid
Date: 6/6/01
City/Area: Bullhead City, AZ
Description of Conditions: Feeding on Eucalyptus camaldulensis
Control Strategy: Relatively little is known about controlling this new pest.

This is not what I had in mind when I suggested that there are many great subjects and stories to shoot in your own backyard. This cute pup from the neighborhood has recently decided to make it part of his daily routine to romp on our trailing rosemary plants, do what dogs do on the lawn and bark and bark and bark and bark, especially when I’m on the phone!
